Ashley and MMG graduate students Taylor Dunivin and Jackson Sorensen traveled to Naperville, IL for the 7th Annual Argonne Soil Metagenomics Meeting this week. We shared our latest results from our investigation of the soil microbial communityies overlying the ongoing Centralia coal mine fire. Student superstars both won travel awards to participate in the meeting (Jackson from TerraGenome, and Taylor from COGS), and they both presented posters. Taylor's poster was about the diversity and mechanisms of microbial arsenic tolerance in Centralia, and Jackson's poster was about Centralai thermophile phylogenetic and functional diversity. Ashley gave a talk about the preliminary tag (thanks, MSU!) and metagenome data (thanks, JGI!) from our Centralia fire-history chronosequence.
